"Is it ever too late?"

Your son (or daughter) has had serious behavior problems for years and you have been unable to make any positive changes. Is it ever too late to turn his behavior around and get him on the right track?

This is an issue on which experts would disagree, but here’s one way to look at it. Until your son is about 16 years old, there are many different ways to improve his behavior. It might even be possible to help him after that age - unless you are allowing him to drive the car. If you have a child who is disrespectful, irresponsible and defiant, he is absolutely not ready to get behind the wheel of a two ton weapon and aim it at other people. If you let him do so regardless of his behavior, then you have probably thrown away your ability to change his behavior.

Discipline is about preparing children for the responsibilities which they will be undertaking. No matter how much a child wants to drive a car, a parent must be prepared to state that the child is not yet ready. To be ready, the child must be required to show a responsible attitude, be able to take the rights and needs of others into account, handle frustrations appropriately, and comply with rules. If your son has serious behavior problems but you let him drive anyway, then you missed the whole point of discipline.
