Save Your Voice

There is more than one way to give directions to children. Instead of using your voice, try using physical prompts and cues. At home, signal children for tasks such as sitting down, taking dishes out to the kitchen, picking up items on the floor and putting things away. At school, use signals to limit interruptions, keep voices down, and instruct students to return to their seats.

If you give verbal commands less often, then children will pay more attention when you do give them. They will also be less argumentative because you will not have engaged them verbally.
