"If he does anything wrong, I want to hear about it."

This is one of the most common statements made by parents when they are talking to teachers about the behavior of their children - unfortunately.

Parents make this comment in order to show their support for teacher. They think this is what the parent-teacher partnership is all about, that it is based upon discussing incidents and deciding on consequences.

Communication between parents and teachers is supposed to be about what they want to accomplish together, not punish together. They are supposed to discuss the skills and attitudes which a child needs to learn and practice, not discuss incidents. True, parents need to be kept informed but only about serious problems, not about every little incident.

So, here’s what parents are supposed to say: "If there is anything you need me to work on, please let me know." This type of communication helps rebuild the parent-teacher partnership.
