"Supervising Adolescents"
During their adolescent years, children want to develop their independence. Since they are only a few years away from adulthood, it’s important for them to be given opportunities to do so - but within limits.
Most adolescents believe they are old enough to take care of themselves. They often feel invulnerable, believing they can handle any situation. Nothing could possibly happen to them. Of course, that’s not the real world and it is the responsibility of adults to protect children from life’s very real dangers.
Hence, adolescents need supervision which, unfortunately, seems to be rare these days. Far too many adolescents are allowed to "hang out" and stay out late which is simply a recipe for serious problems. The supervision of adolescents is supposed to be non-intrusive, not non- existent. They should have some room to ‘spread their wings’ but this doesn’t mean that adults should stop doing their job.
