Kids' Rights
These days, kids are very quick to claim their rights. "It’s my hair. I can do what I want with it." "It’s my tongue. I can get it pierced if I feel like it." Are they right? Up to a certain point, yes. However, this does not mean they can do whatever they want to do.
It’s important to understand that having the right to do something doesn’t make it the right thing to do. The law is about your legal rights. Discipline teaches children to do what’s right. These are two separate issues. If you keep them separate, it will make it easier for you to respond to your children. Here are a couple of examples.
At school, children have the right to wear their hats in the classroom. However, the teachers develop school rules which tell children that such behavior is wrong.
At home, children have the right to get their body pierced once they reach a certain age. It’s essential, however, that they be taught to take the needs and feelings of others into account and to obey house rules.
