Not the Way to Keep Peace in Your Home

As children become increasingly argumentative and confrontational, many experts are recommending that parents should avoid conflict by giving in to their children. Their suggestions include:

If your children won’t clean up their bedrooms, just consider it their own space. Shut the door of the pig sty and don’t go in there anymore.

If your children won’t eat the food you make for supper, ask them what they want to eat and make it for them.

If they won’t do chores, pay them to make it worthwhile. Either that, or simply take care of the chores yourself.

According to the experts, dealing with defiance in this way will keep peace in your house. Not for very long it won’t. You mustn’t put off the job of parenting. If you do, you will pay the price sooner or later. Your children will run the house and be in charge of you, instead of the other way around. So don’t buy into these kind of solutions. Catering to your children to keep the peace will not give you children who are responsible and cooperative. Instead, they will become defiant, selfish, irresponsible, and argumentative.
