"The 80:20 Rule"

These days, everyone wants to know what to do the next time their child misbehaves. Obviously, it’s important to know how to respond effectively. However, this is actually only a small part of real discipline. If you want great kids, follow the 80:20 rule. Put 80% of your energy into prevention - into making sure your children don’t misbehave in the first place. Only 20% of your energy should be used for reacting to problems that have already occurred.

For young children, this means you take them by the hand when you enter a supermarket so they won’t run around the store, not because they already have been. For older children, make sure they have a curfew that keeps them out of trouble, rather than instituting one because they’ve already been in trouble.
