"Are Your Teenagers Monopolizing Your Phone?"

It’s amazing how many parents complain about their teenagers monopolizing the phone. What’s also interesting is how many parents feel helpless in dealing with the issue. Often, this happens because of the focus on kids’ rights. After all, it’s their home too, so how can you make them get off the phone?

Actually, you have no choice. Part of the parental job is to teach children to act with respect for the rights and needs of others. Hence, it is essential that you set limits on phone use, both in terms of length of call and the overall number of calls. Similarly, no incoming calls should be allowed after the time at which most people go to bed. Note that these limits include the use of the phone lines for Internet access.

Even if you choose to put a second phone line into your home, you must still ensure that phone use doesn’t interfere with school work and the completion of chores. First things first - and the phone isn’t the highest priority in anyone’s home.
