Don’t complain about children in their presence.
When you’re raising or teaching children, it’s easy to occasionally become exasperated. There is a natural desire to share this frustration with others. Be careful how you do it. It’s amazing how often adults will complain about children while the children are standing right there. This happens when mothers and fathers discuss issues at the end of the day. It happens when parents talk to teachers, especially when they pick up their children from school. Plus, there are all those phone conversations as well.
Most children are very sensitive and are hurt by these complaints. No adult would ever want to be treated this way. If you must share your frustrations, do it privately. And remember that children overhear many of our conversations, even when they are in bed.
