"The Proper Use of Praise"
Praise is the most common reward used by parents and teachers. Used properly, it encourages children to work hard, play cooperatively and make good choices. It also boosts their self-esteem and builds positive attitudes. Every one of us enjoys receiving a little praise once in a while, as long as it’s sincere.
However, remember that praise must be meaningful. It is supposed to be reserved for behavior and work which is worthy of recognition. When praise is overused, it works in reverse, decreasing motivation and effort. For instance, say a boy has been assigned twenty arithmetic questions. If he is praised for getting one question finished, and then praised again for the second question and so on, it is extremely unlikely that he will ever finish the assignment. After all, why should he?
