"Not Without Me!"
Young children obviously need a great deal of supervision. The older they get, the more we allow them to try things out for themselves. Obviously, they are bound to make mistakes once in a while. When they do, most adults react by giving a consequence, usually scolding, time-outs or a loss of privileges. Here’s something else to try.
Let’s say your son misbehaves when he is playing outside on his own. The next time he asks to go out, answer "Not without me". Add your direct supervision back in to the situation. This gives him the message that he will behave well one way or the other.
Teachers, you can even think about using this strategy when students misbehave in the school washroom. It gives a strong message. (Only use this with young students, of course. It would embarrass older students and that would be wrong.)
