It’s my job!

Part of your authority comes from knowing your job. It comes from knowing that the reason you set limits is to protect your children. You train them to obey rules and teach them how to be responsible and cooperative.

When your children question your authority, tell them, "It’s my job."

When they challenge your right to make demands, tell them, "It’s my job."

Don’t expect your children to understand or appreciate your efforts. The appreciation will come much later, perhaps not until they have children of their own. So, don’t worry if your children don’t like many of the things you do (and they won’t). Discipline isn’t a popularity contest.
