Everyone has to feel a sense of belonging.
People are social creatures and have a deep need to belong to a social group. For children, the less they are connected with their family, the more they will develop strong ties to a peer group. Unfortunately, the strongest bonds available in peer groups are found in gangs. This is because gangs maintain a certain membership and you must work hard to be accepted by the group. So make sure you spend enough meaningful time with your children that their strongest association is with the family. Do things together. Be careful that computers, televisions and telephones don’t create a situation where the family becomes a bunch of individuals each doing their own thing, but rarely associating with each other.
