Chores and Allowance
Should children be paid for doing chores? If you do, your children will develop the attitude that they should only do jobs if there is something in it for themselves. Also, they will think it's okay to skip chores if they don't mind losing some of their allowance. You will hear them make comments like, "Why should I? What do I get for doing it?" Don’t be surprised if they become selfish and uncooperative.
We’re supposed to teach our children to think about other and to cooperate. They need to learn that living in a family means helping each other. Insist they do chores as a way of contributing to the family. Remember that most lessons are learned on small behaviors. Hence, watch for the little ways to teach these lessons. For example, if your son is taking his plate into the kitchen after supper, make sure he also watches for the opportunity to pick up someone else’s plate as well.
Give them an allowance so they learn how to handle money. Many valuable life lessons can be taught this way. Also, having a reasonable amount of spending money gives them a sense of positive control over their world.
