Implusive Children

If you’re dealing with impulsive children, either as a parent or as a teacher, remember that one of the keys is to provide them with the opposite of impulsivity - PLANNING. They need their information BEFORE they enter situations. In fact, this is the only way you can ensure that they actually think about their actions. (Remember that impulsivity means that they act before they complete the thinking process.) Hence, if you are taking them to a supermarket, do a review of how they are expected to behave in the supermarket before entering. The same is true when you are visiting or entertaining, eating in a restaurant, going to a park, and so on. For teachers, help impulsive children deal with playground situations by requiring them to tell you their plan before leaving the classroom. They should tell you what game they intend to play, with whom, where, and who has the equipment. Similarly, help them plan for transitions, activity centres, assemblies, and so on. This may sound like extra work but it actually saves a great deal of time because you will have fewer problems to deal with. Also remember that a buddy system can be used to assist with this task.
