"Post-it"

When you ask a child to do a job, it is essential that you follow through. Take the child to the location of the job and insist that the job be done. Don’t yell or threaten. Instead, speak in a quiet, authoritative tone of voice.

This may take a few minutes and, sometimes, you may not have enough time. Don’t worry about it. The important thing is that the job be done sooner or later. Hence, if you have to go to work, do so. But first, write a note and put it up someplace obvious like the kitchen cupboard. Then, when you return home and see the note, take the child in and insist the job be completed.

Remember - if you won’t take on the authority, courage and determination necessary to have a toy picked up, you will never get curfew! Children learn their lessons on small behaviors and apply them to big ones.
