Concerned About Selfishness ?
Our children live in a world that reinforces selfishness. Just look at
the advertising that surrounds them and influences their lives. It's all
about satisfying your personal desires and getting whatever you want.
If you want your children to develop positive traits like sharing and
giving, you're going to have to make it happen. Start small. When your
children run ahead of you to open a door, require them to hold it open
for you and others. (Remember to do the same for them.) Have them pick
up dishes and toys that are not theirs. Make sure they do chores every
day because chores teach children how families work together.
Have your children pick up litter in the neighbourhood park (as long as
it is safe to do so), rake leaves for the next-door neighbour, or shovel
snow off the walkway of a senior citizen who lives nearby. When you
think about community activities, maybe their are organizations that
could benefit from your child's assistance. Food banks, for instance,
are always looking for strong arms and willing hearts.
When your children go to bed at night, they should always be able to
answer the question, "Who did you help today?" If they can't,
then the day's not over. Teachers should insist that students teach other
students, loan materials, keep the classroom neat. Don't accept the
comment, "I didn't put it there so I'm not picking it up."
Students have to learn to think about others and help others.
Remember - make it happen. It won't happen by accident.
