Staying Sane on Car Trips with Your Kids
Most parents have experienced the frustration of taking children on
long trips by car. Instead of sitting quietly in the back seat, the
children pester each other, poke, tease, and argue. Their constant
complaints are enought to drive any parent crazy. We warn them to
settle down, threaten to take away the things that they are looking
forward to (such as lunch at their favorite restaurant), or offer them
treats if they can just leave each other alone for a little while.
Instead, think prevention. Spend some time creating a "trip box". This is
a box full of games, activities, books and magazines that can only be
opened and used on trips. The rest of the time, the box is kept hidden
away on a shelf. Because all the activities stay fresh, children stay
interested, and busy, for hours. Some good ideas for trip boxes include
puzzle books, word searches, travel games, magazines, battery-operated
games, and coloring materials. Particularly useful is a cassette player
with earphones. Purchase a few special tapes that the children really
enjoy and keep the tapes in the trip box. The children are only allowed
to listen to them during trips in the car. It works great.
